도마복음 전문

(서론)

이것은 살아 계신 예수께서 말씀하시고, 쌍둥이 디두모 유다 도마가 기록한 비밀의 말씀들이다.

These are the secret words which the living Jesus spoke, and Didymus Judas Thomas The Twin recorded

 

1. 그리고 그가 말씀하셨다.

"누구든지 이 말씀들의 의미를 발견하는 자는 죽음을 맛보지 않을 것이다."

(1) And he said: He who shall find the interpretation of the words shall not taste of death.

 

2. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"찾는 사람은 발견할 때까지 멈추지 말아야 한다. 그리고 찾았을 때 그는 근심하게 되리라. 그리고 만일 근심한다면 그는 놀라게 되리라. 그리고 그는 모든 것을 다스리는 왕이 될 것이다."

(2) Jesus said: He who seeks, let him not cease seeking until: finds; and when he finds he will be troubled, and if he is troubled, he will be amazed, and he will reign over the All.

 

3. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

" 만일 너희를 인도하는 사람들이 너희에게 '보라, 그 왕국은 하늘에 있다'라고 말한다면, 새들이 너희보다 하늘에 먼저 갈 것이다. 그리고 만일 그들이 너희에게 '그것은 바다 속에 있다'라고 말한다면, 물고기들이 너희들보다 먼저 갈 것이다. 그러나 그 왕국은 너희 안에 있고 또 너희 밖에 있다. 만일 너희가 너희 자신을 알게 된다면, 아버지가 너희를 알아볼 것이고, 너희는 살아계신 아버지의 아들이라는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 그러나 만일 너희가 너희 자신을 알지 못하면, 너희는 빈곤 속에 있을 것이고, 너희가 빈곤 그 자체이다."

(3) Jesus said: If those who lead you say unto you: Behold, the Kingdom is in heaven, then the birds of the heaven will be before you. If they say unto you: It is in the sea, then the fish will be before you. But the Kingdom is within you, and it is outside of you. When you know yourselves, then shall you be known, and you shall know that you are the sons of the living Father. But if ye do not know yourselves, then you are in poverty, and you are poverty.

 

4. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나이든 사람이 태어난 지 칠일 된 어린 아이에게 생명의 자리에 대하여 묻기를 주저하지 않으면, 그는 살게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 일등인 사람이 꼴찌가 될 사람이 많기 때문이다. 그리고 그들은 혼자된 자가 되리라. "

(4) Jesus said: The man aged in his days will not hesitate (to) ask a little child of seven days about the place of life, and he shall live. For there are many first who shall be last, and they shall become a single one.

 

5. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너의 얼굴 앞에 있는 것을 먼저 알아 보아라, 그리하면 너에게 감추어진 것들이 너에게 드러나게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 감추어진 것은 드러나지 않을 것이 없기 때문이다."

(5) Jesus said: Know what is before thy face, and what hidden from thee shall be revealed unto thee; for there is nothing hidden which shall not be made manifest.

 

6. 그의 제자들이 그에게 물으며 이렇게 말했다.

"우리가 금식해야 하나요? 우리가 어떻게 기도해야 하나요? 우리가 자선 기부금을 주어야 하나요? 그리고 음식을 먹는데 있어서 어떤 규칙을 지켜야 하나요?"

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

" 거짓말 하지 말아라. 그리고, 하기 싫어하는 일은 하지 말아라. 왜냐하면 모든 일이 하늘 앞에 다 드러나기 때문이다. 왜냐하면 숨겨진 것은 알려지지 않을 것이 없고, 덮인 것은 벗겨지지 않을 것이 없기 때문이다."

(6) His disciples asked him and said unto him: Wilt thou that we fast? And how shall we pray? Shall we give alms? And what rules shall we observe in eating? Jesus said: Do not lie; and that which you hate, do not do. For all things are revealed before heaven. For there is nothing hidden which shall not be manifest, and there is nothing covered which shall remain without being uncovered.

 

7. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"사람에게 잡아 먹히게 될 그 사자는 복이 있다. 이제 그 사자가 사람이 되는구나. 그러나 사자에게 잡아 먹히는 그 사람은 저주받았다. 이제 그 사자가 사람이 되는구나."

(7) Jesus said: Blessed is the lion which the man shall eat, and the lion become man; and cursed is the man whom the lion shall eat, and the lion become man.

 

8. 그리고 그가 말씀하셨다.

"사람은 그의 그물을 바다에다 던지는 현명한 어부에 비유될 수 있다. 그는 작은 물고기가 가득 찬 그물을 바다에서 끌어 올렸다. 이 현명한 어부는 이 가운데서 크고 훌륭한 물고기 한 마리를 발견하였다. 그리고 그는 모든 작은 물고기들을 바다에 던졌다. 그는 고민하지 않고 그 큰 물고기를 선택하였다. 들을 귀 있는 자는 들어라."

(8) And he said: Man is like a wise fisherman, who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of small fish. Among them the wise fisherman found a large good fish. He threw down all the small fish into the sea; he chose the large fish without trouble. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

 

9. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"보라, 씨 뿌리는 자가 밖으로 나갔다. 그는 손을 가득 채웠고, 그는 뿌렸다. 어떤 것들은 길 위에 떨어졌는데, 새들이 와서 그것들을 먹어버렸다. 다른 것들은 바위 위에 떨어졌는데, 땅속으로 뿌리를 내지 못하고 하늘로 이삭을 내지도 못하였다. 또 어떤 것들은 가시덤불 속에 떨어졌는데, 가시덤불이 씨앗의 숨을 막았고 벌레들이 그것을 먹어버렸다. 그러나 어떤 것들은 좋은 땅에 떨어졌는데, 하늘을 향해 좋은 열매를 맺었다. 어떤 것은 60배 혹은 120배였다."

(9) Jesus said: Behold, the sower went forth, he filled his hand, he cast. Some fell upon the road; the birds came and gathered them. Others fell on the rock, and sent no root down to the earth nor did they sprout any ear up to heaven. And others fell on the thorns; they choked the seed, and the worm ate them. And others fell on the good earth, and brought forth good fruit unto heaven, some sixty -fold and some an hundred and twenty -fold.

 

10. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 이 세상에 불씨를 던졌다. 그리고 보라, 나는 그것이 활활 타오를 때까지 그것을 지키고 있다."

(10) Jesus said: I have cast fire upon the world, and behold I guard it until it is ablaze.

 

11. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

" 이 하늘은 사라질 것이요, 또 그 위에 있는 것도 사라질 것이다. 그리고 죽은 자들은 살지 못하고, 산 자들은 죽지 않을 것이다. 너희가 죽은 것을 먹어버린 그 날들 동안에, 너희가 그것을 살게 하였느니라. 만일 너희가 빛 속으로 오게 된다면, 너희가 무엇을 하겠느냐? 예전에 너희가 하나였으나, 너희는 둘이 되었다. 그러나, 만일 너희가 둘이 된다면, 너희가 무엇을 하겠느냐?"

(11) Jesus said: This heaven shall pass away, and that which above it shall pass away; and they that are dead are not alive and they that live shall not die. In the days when you were eating that which is dead, you were making it alive. When you come in the light, what will you do? on the day when you were one, you became two. But when you have become two, what will you do?

 

12. 제자들이 예수께 말했다.

"우리는 당신이 우리로부터 떠나 가실 것을 압니다. 그러면 누가 우리들의 지도자가 되겠습니까?"

예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"어디에 있든지 너희는 의인 야고보에게 가거라. 그를 위하여 하늘과 땅이 있게 되었음이다."

(12) The disciples said to Jesus: We know that thou wilt go from us. Who is he who shall be great over us? Jesus said to them: In the place to which you come, you shall go to James the Just for whose sake heaven and earth came into being.

 

13. 예수께서 그의 제자들에게 말씀하셨다.

"비교해 보아라. 그리고 내가 누구와 같을지 나에게 말해 보아라."

시몬 베드로가 그에게 말했다.

"당신은 정의로운 천사와 같습니다."

마태가 그에게 말했다.

"당신은 현명한 철학자와 같습니다."

도마가 그에게 말했다.

"스승님, 저의 입은 당신이 누구와 같은지를 감히 말하지 못합니다."

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 너의 스승이 아니다. 왜냐하면 너는 내가 나누어준 거품이 끓어오르는 샘물을 마시고 취해있기 때문이다."

그리고 그는 그를 데리고 물러나 그에게 세 가지 말씀을 하셨다. 도마가 그의 동료들에게 돌아왔을 때, 그들이 그에게 물었다.

"예수께서 너에게 무엇을 말씀하셨는가?"

도마가 그들에게 말했다.

"만일 내가 그분이 내게 하신 말씀들 중에서 한가지라도 너희에게 말한다면, 너희는 돌들을 집어서 나에게 던질 것이다. 그러면 그 돌들에서 불이 나와서 너희를 태워버릴 것이다."

(13) Jesus said to his disciples: Make a comparison to me, and tell me whom I am like. Simon Peter said to him: Thou art like a righteous angel. Matthew said to him: Thou art like a wise man of understanding. Thomas said to him: Master, my mouth will no wise suffer that I say whom thou art like. Jesus said: I am not thy master, because thou hast drunk, thou hast become drunk from the bubbling spring which I have measured out. And he took him, went aside, and spoke to him three words. Now when Thomas came to his companions, they asked him: What did Jesus say unto thee? Thomas said to them: If I tell you one of the words which he said to me, you will take up stones and throw them me; and a fire will come out of the stones and burn you up.

 

14. 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"만일 너희가 금식한다면, 너희는 너희 자신에게 죄를 짓는 것이다. 그리고 만일 너희가 기도한다면, 너희는 정죄 받을 것이다. 그리고 만일 너희가 자선을 행한다면 너희는 너희의 영혼에 악을 행하는 것이다. 그리고 만일 너희가 어느 땅에 가서, 거기에 있는 동네를 다니더라도, 만일 그들이 너희를 받아들이면, 그들이 너희 앞에 차려주는 음식을 먹어라. 그리고 그들 중 병든 자를 낫게 하라. 왜냐하면 너희의 입으로 들어가는 것은 너희를 더럽히지 않으며, 오히려 너희 입에서 나오는 것이 너희를 더럽히기 때문이다."

(14) Jesus said to them: If you fast, you will beget a sin for yourselves; and if you pray, you will be condemned; and if you give alms, you will do an evil to your spirits. And if you go into any land and travel in its regions, if they receive you eat what they set before you. Heal the sick among them. For that which goes into your mouth will not defile you, but that which comes forth from your mouth, that is what will defile you.

 

15. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 여인으로부터 태어나지 않은 이를 보게 되면, 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려 그를 경배하라. 그가 바로 너희 아버지이시다."

(15) Jesus said: When you see him who was not born of woman, throw yourselves down upon your face and worship him. He is your Father.

 

16. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아마도 사람들은 내가 이 세상에 평화를 주러 왔다고 생각할 것이다. 그러나 그들은 내가 이 세상에 갈등을 주러 왔다는 것은 알지 못한다: 불, 칼 그리고 전쟁을. 한 집에 다섯 사람이 있다면 세 사람은 두 사람과 대립할 것이며, 두 사람은 세 사람과 대립할 것이다. 아버지는 아들과 대립할 것이며, 아들은 아버지와 대립할 것이다. 그리고 그들은 각자의 발로 홀로 서게 될 것이다.

(16) Jesus said: Perhaps men think that I am come to cast peace upon the world, and know not that I am come to cast divisions upon the earth, fire, sword, war. For there shall be five in a house; there shall be three against two, and two against three, the father against the son and the son against the father, and they shall stand as solitaries.

 

17. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"눈으로 본적도 없고, 귀로 들은 적도 없으며, 손으로 만져본 적도 없고, 사람의 마음에 떠오른 적도 없는 것을 내가 너희에게 주겠다."

(17) Jesus said: I will give you that which eye has not seen, an ear has not heard, and hand has not touched, and which has not entered into the heart of man.

 

18. 제자들이 예수께 말했다.

"우리의 마지막이 어떻게 될 것인지 저희에게 말씀해 주십시오."

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 벌써 시작을 발견하고 마지막이 뭔지 묻고 있는가? 왜냐하면 시작이 있는 자리에 마지막이 올 것이기 때문이다. 자기발로 시작에 서 있을 자는 복이 있다. 그는 마지막을 알게 될 것이고 죽음을 맛보지 않으리라."

(18) The disciples said to Jesus: Tell us how our end shall be. Jesus said: Have you then discovered the beginning, that you seek after the end? For where the beginning is, there shall the end be. Blessed is he who shall stand in the beginning, and he shall know the end and shall not taste of death.

 

19. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"존재하기 전에 존재한 자는 복이 있다. 만일 너희가 내 제자가 되어 내 말을 주의 깊게 듣는다면, 이 돌들도 너희를 섬길 것이다. 왜냐하면 너희가 낙원에 있는 여름이나 겨울에도 변함이 없고, 낙엽이 떨어지지 않는 다섯 나무를 가지기 때문이다. 누구든지 그 것들을 알게 되는 자는 죽음을 맛보지 않으리라."

(19) Jesus said: Blessed is he who was before he came into being. If you become my disciples and hear my words, these stones shall minister unto you. For you have five trees in Paradise which do not move in summer or in winter, and their leaves do not fall. He who knows them shall not taste of death.

 

20. 제자들이 예수께 말했다.

"하늘 왕국이 무엇과 같은지 저희에게 말씀해 주십시오."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"그것은 마치 모든 씨앗 중에서 가장 작은 한 알의 겨자씨와 같다. 그러나 만일 그것이 알맞은 땅에 떨어지면, 그것은 자라서 커다란 가지를 뻗어서, 하늘의 새들의 보금자리가 되느니라."

(20) The disciples said to Jesus: Tell us what the kingdom of heaven is like. He said to them: It is like a grain of mustard-seed, smaller than all seeds; but when it falls on the earth which is tilled, it puts forth a great branch, and becomes shelter for the birds of heaven.

21. 마리아가 예수님께 말했다.

"당신의 제자들은 누구와 같습니까?"

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"그들은 자신의 소유가 아닌 밭에서 놀고 있는 어린 아이들과 같습니다. 그 밭의 주인들이 돌아오면, ‘우리의 밭을 다시 우리에게 돌려다오’라고 말할 것입니다. 그러면, 그들은 그가 보는 앞에서 옷을 훌훌 벗고 그것을 그들에게 돌려줍니다. 그러므로 나는 너희에게 말한다. 만일 집주인이 도둑이 오고 있다는 것을 안다면, 그는 도둑이 오기 전에 깨어서 지키고 있을 것이고, 그가 왕국의 집에 침입하여 물건을 가져가지 못하도록 할 것이다. 그러므로 너희들도 세상에 대하여 깨어있어야 한다. 너희 허리띠를 바짝 조여라, 그래서 도둑이 너희에게 접근치 못하게 하여라. 왜냐하면 기대하는 고난이 올 것이기 때문이다. 너희 중에 내 말을 이해하는 사람이 있기를 바란다. 열매가 익어 벌어질 때, 그는 손에 낫을 들고 급히 와서 그것을 거두어 들였다. 들을 귀 있는 자는 들어라."

(21)Mary said to Jesus: Whom are thy disciples like? He said They are like little children dwelling in a field which is not theirs. When the owners of the field come, they will say: Yield up to us our field. They are naked before them, to yield it up to them and to give them back their field. Therefore I say: If the master of the house knows that the thief is coming, he will keep watch before he comes, and will not let him dig into his house of his kingdom to carry off his vessels. You, then, be watchful over against the world. Gird up your loins with great strength, that the brigands may not find a way to come at you, since the advantage for which you look they will find. May there be among you a man of understanding! When the fruit was ripe, he came quickly, his sickle in his hand, and reaped it. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

 

22. 예수께서 젖을 먹는 어린 아이들을 보셨다. 그가 제자들에게 말씀하셨다.

"젖을 먹는 이런 어린이야말로 그 왕국에 들어가는 자들과 같으니라."

그러자 그들이 그에게 말했다.

"그러면 우리가 어린아이가 되어 그 왕국에 들어가게 되나요?"

예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 둘을 하나로 만들 때, 그리고 안쪽을 바깥쪽과 같이 만들고, 바깥쪽을 안쪽과 같이 만들고, 위쪽을 아래쪽과 같이 만들 때, 그리고 너희가 남자와 여자를 하나로 만들고, 그래서 남자는 더 이상 남자가 아니고 여자도 더 이상 여자가 아닐 때 그렇게 되리라. 너희가 눈들의 자리에 눈들을, 손들의 자리에 손들을, 발들의 자리에 발들을, 한 이미지의 자리에 그 이미지가 있게 만들었을 때, 너희는 그 왕국에 들어가게 되리라."

(22)Jesus saw some infants at the breast. He said to his disciples: These little ones at the breast are like those who enter into the kingdom. They said to him: If we then be children, shall we enter the kingdom? Jesus said to them: When you make the two one, and when you make the inside as the outside, and the outside as the inside, and the upperside as the lower; and when you make the male and the female into a single one, that the male be not male and the female; when you make eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then shall you enter [the kingdom].

 

23. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 너희를 선택할 것이다, 천 명 중에 하나를, 만 명 중에 둘을. 그리고, 그들은 자기발로 일어서 혼자된 자가 되리라."

(23) Jesus said: I shall choose you, one out of a thousand, and two out of ten thousand, and they shall stand as a single one.

 

24. 그의 제자들이 말했다.

"당신이 계신 곳을 우리에게 보여 주십시오. 왜냐하면 우리는 그것을 찾아야 하기 때문입니다."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"들을 귀 있는 자는 들어라! 빛의 사람 안에는 빛이 있어서, 그가 온 세상에 빛이 된다. 그러나, 그가 만일 빛이 되지 못하면, 그는 어둠이다."

(24) His disciples said: Teach us concerning the place where thou art, for it is necessary for us to seek after it. He said to them: He that hath ears, let him hear. There is a light within a man of light, and it gives light to the whole world. If it does not give light, there is darkness.

 

25. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"우리 형제를 네 영혼처럼 사랑하고 네 눈동자처럼 보호하라!"

(25) Jesus said: Love thy brother as thy soul; keep him as the apple of thine eye.

 

26. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너는 형제의 눈에 있는 티는 본다. 그러나, 너의 눈에 있는 대들보는 못 보는구나.

그러므로 너는 너의 눈에 있는 대들보를 먼저 뽑아 냈을 때, 네 형제의 눈에 있는 티를 꺼낼 만큼 분명히 볼 수 있을 것이다."

(26) Jesus said: The mote which is in thy brother's eye, thou seest; but the beam which is in thine eye, thou seest not. When thou dost cast out the beam from thine own eye, then wilt thou see to cast out the mote from thy brother's eye.

 

27. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 너희가 세상에 대하여 금식하지 않는다면, 너희는 그 왕국을 발견하지 못할 것이다. 만일 너희가 안식일을 안식일로 만들지 않는다면, 너희는 아버지를 보지 못할 것이다."

(27) Jesus said: If you fast not from the world, you will not find the kingdom; if you keep not the Sabbath as Sabbath, you will not see the Father.

 

28. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 세상의 한 가운데에 내발로 서 있었고, 육신으로서 그들에게 나타났다. 나는 그들 모두가 취해 있는 것을 발견했고, 그들 가운데 목말라하는 자를 발견하지 못했다. 그리고 나의 영혼은 사람의 자식들에 대하여 아파하였다. 왜냐하면 그들은 마음의 눈이 멀어서 밖을 보지 못했기 때문이다. 왜냐하면 그들은 빈 손으로 이 세상에 들어왔고, 그들은 떠날 때도 역시 빈손으로 떠날 것이기 때문이다. 그러나 지금 그들은 취해 있다. 그러나 그들이 술에서 깨어날 때, 그때는 그들이 후회할 것이다."

(28) Jesus said: I stood in the midst of the world, and I appeared to them in flesh. I found them all drunk, I found none among them thirsting; and my soul was afflicted for the sons of men, for they are blind in their heart and they do not see. For empty came they into the world, seeking also to depart empty from the world. But now they are drunk. When they have thrown off their wine, then will they repent.

 

29. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 육신이 영혼으로 인하여 존재하게 되었다면, 그것은 하나의 기적이다. 그러나 만일 영혼이 육신으로 인하여 존재하게 되었다면, 그것은 기적들 중의 기적이다. 그러나 나에게 있어서는, 어떻게 이런 커다란 풍요로움이 이런 가난함 속에 깃들게 되었는지 경이로울 뿐이다."

(29) Jesus said: If the flesh has come into being because of the spirit, it is a marvel; but if the spirit (has come into being) because of the body, it is a marvel of marvels. But as for me, I marvel at this, how this great wealth has settled in this poverty.

 

30. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"그곳에 세 신위(神位)가 있으면, 그들은 신들이다. 그곳에 둘 또는 하나가 있으면, 내가 그와 함께 있다."

(30) Jesus said: Where there are three gods, they are gods; where there are two or one, I am with him.

[*참 고. 30장은 해석은 몹시 어렵습니다. 그런데 그리스어로 쓰여진 옥시린쿠스 자료에서 병행구절이 발견되었는데, 내용이 좀 다릅니다. 여기에는 신이 ‘있다’가 ‘없다’로 반대로 기록되어 있습니다. * 예수께서 말씀하셨다. "그곳에 세 명이 있으면 그곳에는 신이 없다. 그리고 그곳에 홀로 있으면, 나는 말한다, 내가 그와 함께 있으리다." (pOxy 01) * Jesus said, "Where there are three they are without God. And where there is only one, I say, I am with him." (pOxy 01)]

 

31. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"어떤 예언자도 자신의 마을에서 환영 받지 못한다. 어떤 의사도 그를 알고 있는 사람을 고치지 못한다."

(31) Jesus said: No prophet is acceptable in his village; a physician does not heal those who know him.

 

32. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"산 위에 세워진 요새화된 도시는 무너질 수도 없고 숨겨질 수도 없다."

(32) Jesus said: A city that is built on a high mountain and fortified cannot fall, nor can it remain hidden.

 

33. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너는 네 귀와 다른 귀로 듣게 되면, 네 집의 지붕 위에서 그것을 선포하라! 왜냐하면 어떤 사람도 등잔불을 켜서 됫박 아래에 두거나 숨겨진 장소에 두지 않는다. 오히려 그것을 등잔대 위에 두어 들어가고 나오는 사람은 누구든 그 빛을 볼 것이다."

(33) Jesus said: What thou shalt hear in thine ear, proclaim to the other ear on your roof-tops. For no man lights a lamp and sets it under a bushel, nor does he put it in a hidden place; but he sets it upon the lamp-stand, that all who go in and come out may seeits light.

 

34. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 소경이 소경을 인도하면, 둘 다 구덩이 속에 빠진다."

(34) Jesus said: If a blind man lead a blind man, both fall into a pit.

 

35. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"어떤 사람이 힘센 사람의 집에 들어가 그것을 강제로 빼앗으려면, 그가 그의 손들을 묶지 않으면 할 수 없다. 그런 다음에야 그 집을 털어갈 것이다."

(35) Jesus said: It is not possible for anyone to go into the strong man's house and take it (or him) by force, unless he bind his hands; then he will plunder his house.

 

36. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아침부터 저녁까지 그리고 저녁부터 아침까지, 무엇을 입을지 너는 걱정하지 말아라."

(36) Jesus said: Be not anxious from morning to evening and from evening to morning about what you shall put on.

 

37. 그의 제자들이 말했다.

"당신은 언제 우리에게 모습을 나타내실 것이며, 우리는 언제 당신을 보게 되겠습니까?"

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 부끄러움 없이 옷을 벗어 발아래 내려놓고, 마치 어린 아이처럼 그 옷가지를 발로 밟을 수 있다면, 그 때는 너희가 살아 계신 분의 아들을 보게 될 것이고, 그리고 너희는 두려워하지 않으리라."

(37)His disciples said: on what day wilt thou be revealed us, and on what day shall we see thee? Jesus said: When you unclothe yourselves and are not ashamed, and take your garments and lay them beneath your feet like little children, and tread upon them, then [shall ye see] the Son of the living one, and ye shall not fear.

 

38. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"여러 번 너희는 내가 너희에게 말하는 것들을 들으려 하였다. 그러나 나 말고는 들을 만한 사람이 없다. 너희가 나를 찾아도 나를 발견하지 못할 날들이 올 것이다."

(38) Jesus said: Many times have you desired to hear these words which I speak unto you, and you have none other from whom to hear them. Day swill come when you will seek after me, and you will not find me.

 

39. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

" 바리새인들과 서기관들이 지식의 열쇠들을 가져갔다; 그들은 그것을 숨겼다. 그들은 들어가지도 않으면서, 들어가기를 원하는 자들도 못 들어가게 한다. 그러므로 너희는 뱀들처럼 현명하고, 비둘기들처럼 순수해라."

(39) Jesus said: The Pharisees and the scribes have receive the keys of knowledge; they have hidden them. They did not go in, and those who wanted to go in they did not allow. But you be ye wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

 

40. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"포도나무 한 그루가 아버지로부터 떨어져 나와 밖에 심어졌다. 그러나 그것은 뿌리를 내리지 못했다, 그래서 그것을 뿌리째 뽑혀서 버려졌다."

(40) Jesus said: A vine was planted apart from the Father, and since it is not established it will be pulled up by its roots and destroyed.

41. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"자기 손에 가진 자, 그에게 그들은 줄 것이다. 그러나, 가지지 못한 자, 그로부터 그들은 적게 가진 그것마저도 빼앗아 갈 것이다."

(41) Jesus said: He who has in his hand, to him shall be given; and he who has not, from him shall be taken even the little that he has.

 

42. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희는 지나가는 자가 되어라."

(42) Jesus said: Become passers-by.

 

43. 그의 제자들이 그에게 말했다.

"당신은 누구시기에 우리에게 이것들을 말씀하십니까?"

"너희는 내가 너희에게 말하는 것을 듣고도 너희는 내가 누구인지 깨닫지 못한다. 오히려 너희는 유대인들과 같아졌다. 그들은 나무는 사랑하지만 그 열매는 미워하거나, 또는 그들은 열매는 사랑하지만 그 나무는 미워하기 때문이다."

(43) His disciples said to him: Who art thou, that thou shouldst say these things to us? Jesus said to them From what I say unto you, you do not understand who I am, but you have become as the Jews; for they love the tree and hate its fruit, and they love the fruit and hate the tree.

 

44. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아버지를 모독하는 자는 용서받을 것이다. 그리고 그 아들을 모독하는 자도 용서받을 것이다. 그러나 성스러운 영혼(성령)을 모독하는 자는, 땅 위에서도 하늘에서도 용서받지 못할 것이다."

(44) Jesus said: He who blasphemes against the Father will be forgiven, and he who blasphemes against the Son will be forgiven but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either on earth or in heaven.

 

45. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"가시덤불에서 포도를 수확할 수 없고 가시나무에서 무화과를 거둘 수 없다. 왜냐하면 그것들은 열매를 내지 못하기 때문이다. 선한 사람은 그의 보물로부터 좋은 것을 만들어 낸다. 그러나 악한 사람은 그가 마음에 품은 사악한 보물과 그가 말하는 악한 말에서 나쁜 것을 만들어 낸다. 왜냐하면 그는 마음에 가득 차고 넘치는 것으로부터 나쁜 것을 만들어 내기 때문이다."

(45) Jesus said: They do not gather grapes from thorns, no pluck figs from camel-thistles; they do not yield fruit. A good man brings forth a good thing from his treasure; a bad man brings forth evilthings from his evil treasure which is in his heart, and he says evilthings; for out of the abundance of his heart he brings forth evilthings.

 

46. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아담으로부터 세례자 요한에 이르기까지 여자들에게서 태어난 사람들 가운데 세례자 요한보다 더 위대한 사람은 없었다. 말하자면 그의 눈을 넘어서지 못했다. 그러나 나는 말했다, 너희 가운데 그 왕국을 알게 될 자는 아무리 작은 사람이라도 요한보다 더 높게 될 것이다."

(46) Jesus said: From Adam to John the Baptist there is none born of woman who is higher than John the Baptist, so that his eyes will not be broken (?)But I have said, He who shall be among you as a little one shall know the kingdom, and shall be higher than John.

 

47. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"한 사람이 두 마리의 말에 탈 수 없으며, 두 개의 활을 당길 수도 없다. 그리고 한 종이 두 주인을 섬길 수도 없다. 그러지 않으면 하나는 공경하되 다른 하나는 모욕할 것이기 때문이다."

"아무도 오래된 포도주를 마시고 나서 금방 새 포도주를 마시려고 하지 않는다. 그리고 사람들이 새 포도주를 오래된 가죽부대에 넣지 않는데, 이는 부대가 찢어지기 때문이다. 그리고 오래된 포도주를 새 부대에 넣지 않는데, 이는 술이 변질되기 때문이다. "

"그리고 오래된 헝겊으로 새 옷을 깁지 않는다, 왜냐하면 균열이 생길 것이기 때문이다."

(47) Jesus said: It is not possible for a man to ride two horses or draw two bows, and it is not possible for a servant to serve two masters; or he will honour the one and insult the other. A man does not drink old wine and immediately desire to drink new wine; and they do not pour new wine into old skins, lest they burst, nor do they pour old wine into newskins, lest it spoil. They do not sew an old patch on a new garment, for a rent will come.

 

48. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 두 사람이 이 한 집 안에서 서로 화해한다면, 그들이 산을 향하여 '옮겨 가거라' 말하면 그것이 옮겨질 것이다."

(48)Jesus said: If two make peace with one another in this one house, they shall say to the mountain: Be moved, and it shall be moved.

 

49. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"혼자이며 선택 받은 자들은 복이 있다. 왜냐하면 너희가 그 왕국을 발견할 것이기 때문이다. 왜냐하면 너희가 그곳으로부터 나왔고, 그곳으로 돌아갈 것이기 때문이다."

(49) Jesus said: Blessed are the solitary and the elect, for you shall find the kingdom; for you came forth thence, and shall go there again.

 

50. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 그들이 너희에게 '너희는 어디로부터 왔는가?' 라고 묻는다면, '우리는 빛으로부터 왔다, 그곳은 빛이 스스로 존재하게 되었으며, 그것이 자기 발로 서서 이미지로 드러내었다.' 고 대답해라. 만일 그들이 너희에게 '너희는 누구인가?' 라고 묻는다면, '우리는 빛의 아들들이며 살아 계신 아버지의 선택하심을 받은 자들이다.'라고 대답해라. 만일 그들이 너희에게 '너희 안에 존재하는 너희 아버지의 표식이 무엇이냐?' 라고 묻는다면, '그것은 움직임이고 다시 멈춤이다.'라고 대답하라."

(50) Jesus said: If they say to you: Whence have you come?, tell them: We have come from the light, the place where the light came into being through itself alone. It [stood], and it revealed itself in their image. If they say to you: Who are you?, say: We are his sons, and we are the elect of the living Father. If they ask you: What is the sign of your Father in you?, tell them: It is a movement and a rest.

 

51. 그의 제자들이 그에게 말했다.

"언제 죽어서 쉬고 있는 자들이 부활하겠습니까? 그리고 언제 새로운 세상이 오겠습니까?"

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 기다리는 그것은 이미 왔다. 그러나 너희가 그것을 깨닫지 못한다."

(51) His disciples said to him: on what day will the rest of the dead come into being? And on what day will the new world come? He said to them: That which ye await has come, but ye know it not.

 

52. 그의 제자들이 그에게 말했다.

"이스라엘에는 스물 네 명의 예언자들이 말했습니다. 그리고 그들 모두가 당신에 대해서 말했습니다."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"너희는 너희 앞에 살아있는 자를 소홀히 대해왔다. 그리고 죽은 자들에 관해서만 이야기 해왔다."

(52) His disciples said to him: Twenty-four prophets spoke in Israel, and they all spoke concerning (lit. in) thee. He said them: You have neglected him who is alive before you, and have spoken about the dead.

 

53. 제자들이 예수께 물었다.

"할례는 유익합니까? 아닙니까?"

예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"만약 그것이 유익하다면 그들의 아비가 어미에게 할례자로 낳을 것이다. 그러나 영혼의 진정한 할례는 모든 면에서 유익하다는 것이 확인되었다."

(53) His disciples said to him: Is circumcision profitable or not? He said to them: Were it profitable, their father would beget them from their mother circumcised. But the true circumcision in spirit has proved entirely profitable (lit.: has found usefulness altogether).

 

54. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"가난한 자들은 복이 있다. 왜냐하면 하늘 왕국이 너희 것이기 때문이다."

(54) Jesus said: Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven.

 

55. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"누구든지 자기 아비와 어미를 미워하지 않는 자는 나의 제자가 될 수 없다. 그리고 자기 형제와 자매를 미워하고 나처럼 자신의 십자가를 지지 않는 자도 내게 합당하지 않을 것이다."

(55) Jesus said: He who shall not hate his father and his mother cannot be my disciple, and (he who does not) hate his brethren and his sisters and take up his cross like me shall not be worthy of me.

 

56. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"누구든지 이 세상을 깨달은 자는 시체를 발견하였다. 그리고, 누구든지 시체를 발견한 사람에게 이 세상은 합당하지 않다."

(56) Jesus said: He who has known the world has found corpse, and he who has found a corpse, the world is not worthy of him.

 

57. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아버지의 왕국은 좋은 씨앗 하나를 가진 사람과 같다. 그의 원수가 밤에 와서 잡초 하나를 그 좋은 씨앗 위에 뿌렸다. 그러나 그 사람은 그들이 그 잡초를 뽑는 것을 허락하지 않았다. 그가 그들에게 ‘너희가 잡초를 뽑으러 가서, 그것과 함께 밀을 뽑을까 두렵다.’라고 말했다. 왜냐하면 추수 날에는 잡초들이 드러날 것이다. 그리고 그들은 그것들을 뽑아서 그것들을 불태울 것이기 때문이다.'"

(57) Jesus said: The kingdom of the Father is like a man who had [good]seed. His enemy came by night, he sowed a weed among the good seed. The man did not allow them to pull up the weed. He said to them: Lest perhaps you go to pull up the weed, and pull up the wheat with it. For on the day of harvest the weeds will be manifest; they will be pulled up and burned.

 

58. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"고난을 받은 사람은 복이 있다. 그는 생명을 발견하였다."

(58) Jesus said: Blessed is the man who has suffered; he has found the life.

 

59. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 살아있는 동안 살아계신 그 분을 찾아라. 그러지 않으면 너희가 죽어서 그 분을 찾아도 볼 수 없을 것이다."

(59) Jesus said: Look upon the living one so long as you live, that you may not die and seek to see him, and be unable to see.

 

60. 어떤 사마리아 사람이 어린 양 한 마리를 끌고 유대 땅으로 가는 것을 보시고, 그가 그의 제자들에게 말씀하셨다.

"왜 그가 저 어린 양을 데리고 가는가?"

그들이 그에게 말했다.

"아마도 그가 그것을 죽여서 그것을 먹으려고 하는 것 같습니다."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"그것이 살아있을 동안에는 그가 그것을 먹지 못한다. 그러나 만일 그가 그것을 죽여서 그것이 시체가 되면 (먹을 것이다)."

그들이 말했다.

"그는 다른 방법이 없습니다."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"너희도 또한 쉴 수 있는 자신의 안식처를 찾아라, 그러지 않으면 너희도 시체들이 되어서 그들이 너희를 먹게 될 것이다."

(60) They saw a Samaritan carrying a lamb going into Judaea. He said to his disciples: Why does he carry the lamb? They said to him: That he may kill it and eat it. He said to them: So long as it is alive he will not eat it, but if he kill it and it become a corpse. They said: Otherwise he will not be able to do it. He said to them: You also, seek for yourselves a place within for rest, lest you become a corpse and be eaten.

61. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"둘이 한 침대에서 쉬고 있는데 하나는 죽고 하나는 살 것이다."

살로메가 말했다.

"사람이여, 당신은 누구입니까? 그리고 누구의 아들입니까? 당신은 저의 침상에 올라 오셨고 저의 식탁에서 드셨습니다."

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 언제나 동일한 분으로부터 나온 사람이다. 그리고 나에게는 내 아버지께 허가된 일들이 주어졌다."

"나는 당신의 제자입니다."

"그러므로 나는 말한다. 만일 그것이 동일하다면 그것은 빛으로 가득 차게 될 것이다. 그러나 만일 그것이 분리되면 그것은 어둠으로 가득 차게 될 것이다."

(61) Jesus said: Two shall rest upon a bed; one shall die, the other live.

Salome said: Who art thou; O man? And whose son? Thou hast mounted my bed, and eaten from my table. Jesus said to her I am he who is from that which is equal; to me was given of the things of my Father. Salome said I am thy disciple. Jesus said to her Therefore I say, when it is equal it will be filled with light, but when it is divided it will be filled with darkness

 

62. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 나의 비밀을 알아들을 수 있는 자들에게만 나의 비밀을 말한다. 너의 오른손이 하는 일을 왼손이 알지 못하도록 해라."

(62) Jesus said: I tell my mysteries to those [who are worthy of my] mysteries. What thy right hand shall do, let not thy left hand know what it does.

 

63. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"재산이 많은 큰 부자가 있었습니다. 그가 말하기를 '나의 재산을 활용해서 씨를 뿌리고 기르고 거두어 나의 창고에 가득 채우리라. 그러면 나는 더 이상 아무런 부족함이 없게 되리라.' 그의 가슴속에 이런 생각들을 품었다. 하지만 바로 그날 밤에 그는 죽었느니라. 누구든지 귀 있는 사람은 들어라."

(63) Jesus said: There was a rich man who had many possessions. He said: I will use my possessions that I may sow and reap and plant, and fill my barns with fruit, that I may have need of nothing. These were his thoughts in his heart. And in that night he died. He that hath ears, let him hear.

 

64. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"어떤 사람에게 초대할 손님이 있었다. 그가 저녁 만찬을 준비했을 때, 하인을 보내어 그 손님들을 불러오게 했다. 하인이 첫 번째 손님에게 가서 그에게 말했다 '저의 주인님이 당신을 초대합니다'. 그러나 그 사람이 말하기를 '내가 어떤 상인들에게 빌려준 돈이 있는데 그들이 오늘밤에 나를 찾아 올 것이다. 나는 가서 그들에게 돈을 갚아 달라고 해야 하겠다. 그러므로 나를 그 만찬에서 제외시켜주기 바란다.' 라고 했다.

그래서 그 하인은 다른 손님에게 가서 그에게 말하기를, '저의 주인님이 당신을 초대했나이다." 라고 하였으나, 그 사람이 하인에게 말하기를, '나는 집을 한 채 샀는데 그것 때문에 며칠 동안 거기에 가야 한다. 그래서 시간을 낼 수 없다.'고 하였다.

이 에 그 하인이 또 다른 손님에게 가서 말하기를, '저의 주인님께서 당신을 초대했나이다' 라고 하였더니, 그 사람이 말하기를, '내 친구가 결혼을 하게 되었기 때문에 내가 연회를 준비해야 하니 가지 못하겠다. 그러니 그 만찬에서 나를 제외시켜 주기 바란다.'고 하였다.

이에 그 하인은 다음 사람에게 가서 말하기를, '내 주인님께서 당신을 초대했나이다.' 라고 했으나, 그 사람이 종에게 말하기를, '나는 농장을 하나 샀는데 그 소작료를 받으러 가야 한다. 그러므로 부디 나를 제외시켜 주시오.'라고 했다.

그 하인은 돌아와 그의 주인께 말씀 드렸다. '당신께서 저녁 만찬에 초대하신 이들이 모두 못 온다고 합니다.' 하니, 그 주인이 그 하인에게 말하기를, '거리로 나가서 네가 길에서 만나는 사람들을 모두 데려와 만찬을 들게 하라."고 했다. 장사꾼과 중개인들은 내 아버지의 집에 들어가지 못할 것이니라.

(64) Jesus said: A man had guests, and when he had prepared the dinner he sent his servant to summon the guests. He came to the first; he said to him: My master summons thee. He said: I have money with some merchants. They are coming to me in the evening. I will go and give them orders. I pray to be excused from he dinner.

He went to another; he said to him: My master has summoned thee. He said to him: I have bought a house, and they ask me for a day. I shall not have time.

He came to another; he aid to him: My master summons thee. He said to him: My friend is about to be married, and I am to hold a dinner. I shall not be able to come. I pray to be excused from the dinner.

He went to another; he said to him: My master summons thee. He said him: I have bought a village; I go to collect the rent. I shall not be able to come. I pray to be excused.

he servant came, he said to his master: Those whom thou didst summon to the dinner have excused themselves. The master said to his servant: Go out to the roads. Bring those whom thou shall find, that they may dine. The buyers and the merchants [shall] not [enter] the places of my Father.

 

65. 그가 말씀하셨다.

"한 선한 사람이 포도밭을 가지고 있었다. 그는 몇몇 소작농들에게 그것을 빌려주어, 거기에서 일하고 열매를 수확할 수 있도록 했다. 그는 그의 하인을 보내서 농부들이 그 포도밭에서 수확한 열매의 소작료를 받게 하였다. 그런데 그 농부들은 그 하인을 붙잡아 때려서 거의 죽게 만들었다. 그 하인이 돌아와 그의 주인에게 보고했다. 그러자 그 주인이 말하기를, '아마도 그들이 내 하인을 못 알아 보았나 보다.'하고 다른 하인을 보내었다. 그러나 그 농부들은 그 하인도 역시 때렸다. 그래서 그 주인은 자신의 아들을 보냈다. 그리고 말하기를, '아마도 그들이 내 아들은 존경할 것이다.' 그러나 그 농부들은 그 아들이 포도밭의 상속자임을 알았기 때문에 그를 잡아서 죽였다. 누구든 귀 있는 자는 들어라."

(65) He said: A good man had a vineyard. He gave it to husbandmen that they might work it, and he receive its fruit their hand. He sent his servant, that the husbandmen might give him the fruit of the vine yard. They seized his servant, they beat him, and all but killed him. The servant came (and) told his master. His master said: Perhaps they did not know him. He sent another servant; the husbandmen beat the other also. Then the master sent his son. He said: Perhaps they will reverence my son. Those husbandmen, since they knew that he was the heir the vineyard, they seized him (and) killed him. He that hath ears, let him hear.

 

66. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"건축가들이 안 쓰고 버린 그 돌을 나에게 보여주라. 그것이 바로 머릿돌 이니라."

(66) Jesus said: Show me the stone which the builders have rejected. That one is the cornerstone.

 

67. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"어떤 사람이 모든 것을 다 알아도 자신을 알지 못하면 그는 모든 면에서 지혜가 부족하다."

(67) Jesus said: He who knows the All but fails (to know) himself lacks everything.

 

68. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"그들이 조롱하고 박해한다면 너희들은 복이 있다. 그들은 더 이상 너희들을 박해할 장소를 찾지 못할 것이다."

(68) Jesus said: Blessed are you when they hate you, and persecute you, and do not find a place in the spot where they persecuted you.

 

69. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"마음에 박해를 받는 사람들은 복이 있다. 그들은 진실로 그 아버지를 알게 될 것이다. 굶주림으로 고통 받는 사람들은 복이 있다. 그들의 배는 원하는 것으로 채워질 것이다."

(68) Jesus says: "Blessed are those who have been persecuted in their heart. They are the ones who have truly come to know the Father. Blessed are those who suffer from hunger, so that the belly of the one who wishes (it) will be satisfied."

 

70. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 너희가 너희 안의 그것이 열매 맺게 하면, 너희가 가진 그것이 너희를 구할 것이다.

그러나 만일 너희가 너희 안에 그것을 가지지 못하면, 너희가 가지지 못한 그것이 너희를 죽일 것이다."

(70) Jesus said: When you bring forth that in yourselves, that which you have will save you. If you do not have that in yourselves, that which you do not have in you will kill you.

 

71. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"내가 이 집을 무너뜨릴 것이다. 그리고 아무도 그것을 다시 세우지 못할 것이다."

(71) Jesus said: I will des[troy this] house, and none shall able to build it [again].

 

72. 한 사람이 그에게 말했다.

"나의 형제들에게 말씀하시어 내 아버지의 재산을 나와 나누도록 해주소서."

그가 그에게 말씀하셨다.

"오 남자여, 누가 나를 나누는 사람으로 만들었는가?"

그가 그의 제자들에게 몸을 돌려 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"나는 나누는 사람이 아니다. 그렇지 않은가?"

(72) [A man said] to him: Speak to my brethren, that they may divide my father's possessions with me. He said to him: O man, who made me a divider? He turned to his disciples (and) said to them: I am not a divider, am I?

 

73. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"추수할 것은 엄청 많은데 일꾼은 적다. 그러니, 주님께 추수할 들판에 일꾼들을 보내달라고 기도할 수 밖에 없다."

(73) Jesus said: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few; but pray the Lord, that he send forth labourers into the harvest.

 

74. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"주여, 많은 사람들이 우물가에 둘러 있습니다. 그러나, 우물 속에는 아무 것도 없습니다."

(74) He said: Lord, there are many about the well, but no one in the well.

 

75. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"많은 사람들이 문 앞에 서있다. 그러나, 홀로된 사람만이 신부의 방에 들어갈 것이다."

(75) Jesus said: There are many standing at the door, but the solitary are they who shall enter the bridal chamber.

 

76. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아버지의 왕국은 마치 많은 물품을 가지고 있으면서 한 알의 진주를 발견한 한 장사꾼과 같다. 그 장사꾼은 지혜로웠다. 그는 가지고 있던 물품들을 다 팔아서 자기 자신을 위해서 그 진주 하나만을 샀다. 그러므로 너희들도 마찬가지로, 소멸되지 않고 지속되며, 벌레가 먹어 치우지도 않고, 좀이 먹지도 않는 그의 보물을 찾아라."

(76) Jesus said: The kingdom of the Father is like a merchant was who had a load (of goods) and found a pearl. That merchant was wise. He sold the load, and bought for himself the pearl alone. You also, seek after his treasure which does not perish but endures, where moth does not enter to devour, nor does worm destroy.

 

77. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나는 그들 모두를 비추는 빛이다. 나는 만물이다. 모든 것은 나로부터 나왔고, 모든 것은 나에게 도달한다. 통나무를 쪼개 보라. 그러면 나는 거기에 있다. 저 돌을 들어올려 보라. 그러면 너희는 거기에서 나를 발견할 수 있을 것이다."

(77) Jesus said: I am the light that is over them all. I am the All; the All has come forth from me, and the All has attained unto me. Cleave a (piece of) wood: I am there. Raise up the stone, an ye shall find me there.

 

78. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희는 무엇 때문에 들판에 나왔는가? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대를 보려고? 그리고 부드러운 옷을 입은 사람을 보려고? 보라, 너희의 왕들과 고관들은 부드러운 옷을 입은 사람들이다. 그러나 그들은 진실은 알지 못할 것이다."

(78) Jesus said: Why came ye forth into the field? To see reed shaken by the wind? And to see a man clothed in soft raiment? [Behold, your] kings and your great men are they who are clothed in soft [raiment], and they [shall] not be able to know the truth.

 

79. 군중 속에 한 여자가 예수께 말했다.

"당신을 낳은 자궁과 당신을 먹였던 젖가슴은 복되다"

그가 그녀에게 말씀하셨다.

"아버지의 말씀을 듣고 이를 진실로 간직한 이들은 복되다. 왜냐하면 너희가 '아이를 잉태한적 없는 자궁과 모유를 내지 않은 젖가슴이 복되다'라고 말하게 될 날들이 있을 것이기 때문이다."

(79) A woman in the crowd said to him: Blessed is the womb which bore thee, and the breasts which nourished thee. He said to her: Blessed are they who have heard the word of the Father and have kept it in truth. For there shall be days when you will say: Blessed is that womb which has not conceived, and those breasts which have not given suck.

 

80. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"이 세상을 알게 된 사람은 누구든지 몸을 발견할 것이다. 그리고 이미 몸을 발견한 자에게 이 세상은 더 이상 합당하지 않다."

(80) Jesus said: He who has known the world has found the body, and he who has found the body, the world is not worthy of him.

81. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"부유하게 된 자가 왕이 되게 하라. 그리고 권력을 가진 자들은 물러나게 하라."

(81) Jesus said: He who has become rich, let him become king, and he who has power let him deny.

 

82. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나에게 가까이 있는 사람은 불에 가까이 있다. 그러나 나로부터 멀리 떨어져 있는 사람은 그 왕국으로부터 멀리 떨어져 있다."

(82) Jesus said: He who is near to me is near the fire, and he who is far from me is far from the kingdom.

 

83. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"그 이미지들은 사람의 눈에 드러난다. 그리고 그 안에 있는 빛은 이미지 안에 감추어져 있다. 그 빛은 드러날 것이다. 그리고 그 이미지는 빛에 의해 감추어질 것이다."

(83) Jesus said: The images are revealed to the man, and the light which is in them is hidden in the image of the light of the Father. He shall be revealed, and his image is hidden by his light.

 

84. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 자신과 닮은 것을 볼 때에도 너희는 기뻐한다. 그런데 너희가 생기기 전부터 존재하는 너희들의 이미지 -- 그것들은 죽지도 않고 드러나지도 않는다-- 를 보게 될 때는, 너희가 얼마나 견딜 수 있겠는가?"

(84) Jesus said: When you see your likeness, you rejoice; but when you see your images which came into being before you -- they neither die nor are made manifest -- how much will you bear?

 

85. 예수께서 말씀하시니라.

"아담은 거대한 힘과 거대한 부유함으로부터 나왔다. 그러나 그는 너희들만큼 가치 있지는 않았다. 왜냐하면 만약 그가 너희들만큼 가치를 지니고 있었더라면, 아담은 죽음을 맛보지 않았을 것이다."

(85) Jesus said: Adam came into being out of a great power and a great wealth, and yet he was not worthy of you. For if he tad been worthy, he would not have tasted of death.

 

86. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"여우들도 자기의 굴이 있고 새들도 자기의 둥지가 있는데, 사람의 아들은 머리를 눕혀 쉴 곳이 없구나."

(86) Jesus said: [The foxes have] the[ir holes] and the birds have [theirs nest, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head and rest.

 

87. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"몸에 의존하는 그 몸은 가련하다. 그리고 이 둘에 의존하는 그 영혼은 가련하다."

(87) Jesus said: Wretched is the body which depends upon a body, and wretched is the soul which depends on these two.

 

88. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"천사들이 예언자들과 함께 너희에게로 올 것이다. 그리고 그들은 너희들에게 속한 것을 너희에게 줄 것이다. 그러면 너희들도 손에 가진 것을 그들에게 주고는 스스로에게 물어보라. '언제 그들이 와서 그들의 것을 가져갈 것인가?'"

(88) Jesus said: The angels come to you, and the prophets, and they shall give you what belongs to you; and you also, give the what is in your hands, and say to yourselves: on what day do they come and take what is theirs?

 

89. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"무엇 때문에 너희들은 잔의 바깥쪽을 씻는가? 너희들은 아직도 안쪽을 만든 분이 또한 바깥쪽도 만들었다는 것을 알지 못하는가?"

(89) Jesus said: Why do you wash the outside of the cup? Do you not understand that he who made the inside is also he who made the outside?

 

90. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나에게로 오라. 왜냐하면 나의 멍에는 쉽고 나의 다스림은 온화하기 때문이다. 그리고 너희는 자신의 안식을 찾을 것이다."

(90) Jesus said: Come unto me, for easy is my yoke and my lordship is gentle, and you shall find rest for yourselves.

 

91. 그들이 그에게 말했다.

"우리가 당신을 믿을 수 있도록 당신이 누구인지 우리에게 말씀해 주십시오. "

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"너희는 하늘과 땅의 얼굴은 구별하지만, 너희 바로 앞에 있는 사람이 누구인지는 구별하지 못하고, 너희는 지금 이 시간이 어떤 때인지 구별하지 못하는구나."

(91) They said to him: Tell us who thou art, that we may believe in thee. He said to them: You test the face of the heaven and the earth, and him who is before you do not know, and you know not to test this moment.

 

92. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"구하라 그러면 찾을 것이다. 예전에 너희가 나에게 그것에 대해 물었을 때, 나는 그때 너희들에게 말해 주지 않았다. 그러나 지금 내가 그것에 대해 말하려고 해도, 너희들은 그것을 구하지 않는구나."

(92) Jesus said: Seek, and ye shall find; but those things concerning which ye asked me in those days, I did not tell you then. Now I wish to tell them, and ye seek not after them.

 

93. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"거룩한 것들을 개들에게 주지 마라. 그 놈들이 그것을 똥 거름 위에 던져 버릴까 하노라. 진주를 돼지들 앞에 던져주지 말라. 그들이 그것을 부수어 조각 내 버릴까 하노라."

(93) Jesus said: Give not that which is holy to the dogs, lest they cast them on the dung-heap; cast not the pearls to the swine lest they grind it [to bits].

 

94. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"찾는 사람은 발견할 것이요. 두드리는 사람에게는 열릴 것이니라."

(94) Jesus [said]: He who seeks shall find, and he who knock to him it shall be opened.

 

95. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"만일 너희가 돈을 가지고 있다면, 이자를 받고 그것을 빌려주지 말라. 차라리 그 돈을 돌려 받지 못할 사람에게 줘버려라."

(95) [Jesus said]: If you have money, do not lend at interest, but give [it] to him from whom you will not receive them back.

 

96. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아버지의 왕국은 작은 효모 조각을 밀가루반죽 속에 숨기는 여인과 같다. 그녀는 커다란 빵을 만들었느니라. 누구든 귀 있는 사람은 들어라."

(96) Jesus [said]: The kingdom of the Father is like a woman who took a little leaven and [hid] it in meal; she made large loaves of it. He that hath ears, let him hear.

 

97. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아버지의 왕국은 밀가루가 가득 든 항아리를 이고 먼 길을 걸어가는 한 여인과 같다. 항아리의 손잡이가 깨져서, 밀가루가 그녀가 지나간 길 위에 흘렀다. 그러나 그녀는 알아채지 못했고, 손실을 알지 못하였다. 그녀가 자기의 집에 도착해서 단지를 내려 놓았을 때, 그것은 비어 있었다."

(97) Jesus said: The kingdom of the [Father] is like a woman; carrying a jar full of meal and walking a long way. The handle the jar broke; the meal poured out behind her on the road. She was unaware, she knew not her loss. When she came into her house, she putdown the jar (and) found it empty.

 

98. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"아버지의 왕국은 어떤 힘센 사람을 죽이려고 하는 남자와 같다. 그는 자신의 손의 힘이 강한지 알아보기 위하여 집안에서 칼을 꺼내어서 벽을 찔러 보았다. 그리고 그는 그 힘센 사람을 찔렀다."

(98) Jesus said: The kingdom of the Father is like a man who wanted to kill a great man. He drew the sword in his house and drove it into the wall, that he might know that his hand would be strong. Then he slew the great man.

 

99. 제자들이 그에게 말했다.

"당신의 형제들과 어머니가 밖에 서 있습니다."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"내 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 여기 있는 사람들이 내 형제들이고 내 어머니다. 이들이 내 아버지의 왕국에 들어갈 사람들이다."

(99) The disciples said to him: Thy brethren and thy mother are standing outside. He said to them: Those here who do the will of my Father, these are my brethren and my mother; these are they who shall enter into the kingdom of my Father.

 

100. 그들이 예수께 금화 한 닢을 보여드리며 말했다.

"황제에 속한 사람들이 우리에게 세금을 요구합니다."

그가 그들에게 말씀하셨다.

"황제에게 속한 것은 황제에게 주고, 신에게 속한 것은 신에게 주고, 그리고 나의 것은 나에게 주라."

(100) They showed Jesus a gold piece and said to him: They who belong to Caesar demand tribute from us. He said to them: What belongs to Caesar give to Caesar, what belongs to God give to God, and what is mine give unto me.

101. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"나와 같이 자기의 아버지와 어머니를 미워하지 않는 자는 내 제자가 될 수 없다. 또, 나와 같이 자기의 아버지와 어머니를 사랑하지 않는 자도 내 제자가 될 수 없다. 왜냐하면 낳아준 나의 어머니는 아니지만, 진정한 나의 어머니는 나에게 생명을 주시기 때문이다."

(101) Jesus said He who shall not hate his father and: mother like me can not be my [disciple], and he who shall [not] love [his father] and his mother like me cannot be my [disciple]; for my mother [. ..] but my true [mother] gave me life.

 

102. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"화 있을지니 바리새인들이여! 왜냐하면 그들은 소여물통 앞에서 자고 있는 한 마리 개와 같기 때문이다. 그 놈은 자기가 먹지도 않으면서 소들도 먹지 못하게 한다."

(102) And Jesus said: Woe to them, the Pharisees! For they are like a dog sleeping in the manger of the cattle; for he neither eats, nor does he let the cattle eat.

 

103. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"도적들이 쳐들어 올 부분을 아는 사람은 복이 있다. 그는 자신을 영지의 사람들을 모아 군사를 일으키고, 허리에 요대를 갖춰 입고 그들이 오기 전에 대비할 수 있기 때문이니라."

(103) Jesus said: Blessed is the man who knows in what part the robbers are coming, that he may rise and gather his [domain] and gird up his loins before they come in.

 

104. 그들이 그에게 말했다.

"오세요, 오늘 우리가 기도하고 금식합시다."

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"내가 무슨 죄를 지었는가? 아니면 내가 무엇을 어겼는가? 차라리 신랑이 신부 방에서 나왔을 때, 그때는 그들에게 기도하고 금식하게 하라."

(104) They said [to him]: Come, let us pray today and fast. Jesus said: What then is the sin that I have done, or wherein have I been vanquished? But when the bridegroom comes forth from the bridal chamber, then let them fast and pray.

 

105. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"누구든 아버지와 어머니를 알게 될 사람은 창녀의 아들이라고 불리게 될 것이다."

(105) Jesus said: He who shall know father and mother shall be called the son of a harlot.

 

106. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"너희가 둘을 하나로 만들 때, 너희는 사람의 아들이 될 것이다. 그리하여 너희들이 '산아 옮겨져라'라고 말하면 그 산이 옮겨질 것이다."

(106) Jesus said: When you make the two one, you shall become sons of man, and when you say: Mountain, be moved, it shall be moved.

 

107. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"그 나라는 마치 백 마리의 양을 가진 한 목자와 같다. 그들 중 가장 커다란 양 한 마리를 잃어 버렸다. 그는 아흔 아홉 마리의 양을 떠나서 한 마리를 발견할 때까지 찾아 다녔다. 그렇게 고생한 후에 목자는 그 양에게 '나는 아흔 아홉 마리의 양보다 너를 더 사랑한단다.'라고 말했다."

(107) Jesus said: The kingdom is like a shepherd who had hundred sheep. one of them, the biggest, went astray. He left the ninety-nine and sought after the one till he found it. When he had laboured, he said to the sheep: I love thee more than the ninety-nine.

 

108. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"그 누구든지 나의 입으로부터 마시는 그 사람은 나와 같아질 것이다. 나 또한 그 사람이 될 것이다. 그리하면 감추어진 일들이 그에게 드러나게 될 것이니라."

(108) Jesus said: He who shall drink from my mouth shall become like me; I myself will become he, and the hidden thing shall be revealed to him.

 

109. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"왕국은 자신의 밭에 숨겨진 보물을 가졌으나 이것을 알지 못하는 사람과 같다. 그 사람이 죽고 나서 그 밭을 그의 아들에게 물려주었다. 그 아들도 또한 그것을 알지 못하였다. 그는 그 밭을 상속받아 다른 사람에게 팔아버렸다. 그 밭을 산 사람이 밭을 갈다가 보물을 발견하였다. 그 사람은 이제 이자를 받고 빌려주고 싶은 사람에게 돈을 빌려주기 시작했다."

(109) Jesus said: The kingdom is like a man who had in his field a [hidden]treasure about which he did not know; and [after] he died he left it to his [son. The] son also did not know; he took (possession of) that field and sold it. The man who bough it came to plough, and [found] the treasure. He began to lend money at interest to whomsoever he chose.

 

110. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"누구든지 이 세상을 발견하여 부자가 된 사람은, 이 세상을 부정하게 하라."

(110) Jesus said: He who has found the world and become rich, let him deny the world.

 

111. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"하늘과 땅이 너희들의 눈앞에서 요동칠 것이다. 그러나 살아 계신 분 안에서 사는 사람은 결코 죽음도 두려움도 보지 않을 것이다. " 왜냐하면 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하시기 때문이다. "누구든지 자기 자신을 발견하게 되면, 그에게 이 세상은 가치가 없다."

(111) Jesus said: The heavens shall be rolled up and the earth before your face, and he who lives in the living one shall neither see death nor (fear); because Jesus says: He who shall find himself, of him the world is not worthy.

 

112. 예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"영혼에 의존하는 육체는 비참하다. 그리고 육체에 의지하는 영혼도 비참하다."

(112) Jesus said: Woe to the flesh which depends upon the soul; woe to the soul which depends upon the flesh.

 

113. 그의 제자들이 그에게 말했다.

"언제 그 왕국이 오겠습니까?"

"그것은 보이게 오지 않는다. 그들이 '여기를 보라!', '저기를 보라!' 이렇게 말하지 않을 것이다. 오히려 아버지의 왕국은 온 땅에 펼쳐져 있다. 그러나 사람들은 그것을 보지 못한다."

(113) His disciples said to him: on what day will the kingdom come? : It cometh not with observation. They will not say: Lo, here! or: Lo, there! But the kingdom of the Father is spread out upon the earth, and men do not see it.

 

114. 시몬 베드로가 그들에게 말했다.

"마리아를 우리에게서 떠나게 하자. 여인들은 생명에 합당하지 않기 때문이다."

예수께서 말씀하셨다.

"보라, 내가 그녀를 인도하여, 그녀도 너희 남자들처럼 살아있는 영혼이 될 수 있도록, 내가 그녀를 남성으로 만들겠다. 왜냐하면 자기 자신을 남자로 만드는 여인은 하늘 왕국에 들어갈 것이기 때문이다."

(114) Simon Peter said to them: Let Mary go forth from among us, for women are not worthy of the life. Jesus said: Behold, I shall lead her, that I may make her male, in order that she also may become a living spirit like you males. For every woman who makes herself male shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.
